We all spent a good chunk of our lives wanting to stomp that damned dinosaur and set him on fire and tear him to shreds before flushing the remains down the toilet. So, yeah, anyone who grew up during the mid-nineties hates Barney with a driving passion. Babysitters, waiting rooms, even the display tvs at the store. And not just at home! During that time, Barney was the go-to for anyone looking after young children. We had three of these eight hour tapes (with the commercials clipped out, that put nineteen half-hour episodes per tape) and they would be played over and over and over while my niece stayed with us for days at a time.įrom the time I was nine until I was about fourteen, every few weeks it would be endless Barney. My sister's husband was a truck driver and every few weeks she'd go on the road with him for three or four days and my niece stayed with us during that time. She even bought my mom a brand new VCR that would play these tapes and made copies for when my mom would babysit. My sister, in the infinite wisdom held by every mother of a toddler, recorded Barney every day on these fancy new SLP tapes that could run a full eight hours. She would beg to watch Barney, day in, day out. My nice, seven years younger than me, had Barney as a part of her life from the time that she was a toddler. I was just a bit too old for Barney when he first came on the scene.
